In The Garden… Zucchinis Anyone?

2014-11-21_4721

Hello! Would you like some zucchinis? I currently have three in my fridge ready to eat. Do you need more? Well, there is five more growing as we speak!

Say hi to my first zucchini harvest. What do you think? I am pretty pleased with my zucchini. After trying to grow zucchini before and to end up with just failures, I think this is a great first success!

Everything in the veggie garden has something growing. The plants are either flowering or starting to grow their edible goodies.

My beans are getting to be a good length for harvesting.

I have started to cover the young fruits on the apricot and peach trees with net bags. Even though the fruit is still green, the possums would come and eat it. One year the possums had destroyed nearly all of the fruit. I can tell you that I was very peeved that year!

I have finally replanted my strawberry plants into their new home.

And my blackberry and loganberry bushes are beginning to produce bunches of yummy goodness.

My First Harvest

My garden is going well. It won’t be too long now until there will be an abundance of edible goodies to harvest.

These gorgeous beetroots are my first successful harvest (some are still growing). I’m very happy with these three guys. My last attempt at growing beetroot didn’t even get to this size. I think the dirt was too compact for them to grow. They didn’t even reach golf ball size!

The beans have such cute little flowers, don’t you think?

The wild strawberries are just popping up everywhere.

Have you ever tasted a wild strawberry? They are little bursts of sweetness. Here is one that is just starting to turn red.

And with the lovely sun that has shone over on my backyard, the zucchini’s have just jumped ahead in growth. Look at this one, I reckon I need to get my zucchini recipes ready!

In The Garden… There’s a lot happening!

My garden has burst into action over the past two weeks. Plants are flowering, and there is an abundance of new growth.

The zucchini has started to grow. I am very excited as I haven’t had much luck with growing zucchini. This plant is growing in my new veggie garden.

The beetroot is flourishing.

The strawberries are flowering. I bought them a couple of weeks ago, and they are still in their little pots. I think I better replant them soon. Some of the plants even have strawberries starting to form.

The pea pods are expanding with juicy peas growing inside.

inthegarden24f

The loganberry plant that I planted last year has started to flower. I can’t wait to see how they grow.

inthegarden24

The apricot tree has fruit already forming. I think it’s starting quite early this year.

inthegarden24d

The peach tree is not too far behind with fruit either. Not as big as the apricots though.

I have decided to do the In The Garden post every second Friday of the month. I was finding that every week I didn’t have a lot of new things to share. And maybe it gives you a chance to join in too.

In The Garden… A New Veggie Patch

I have a new veggie patch! I wanted to find another area in our backyard to grow some more veggies. When we first moved into our house, we had set up a little garden down a side area. It did work for a while, but the plants weren’t getting enough sun. They needed to be high up to reach the suns rays. We let it go and stopped planting anything around the side and ended up getting three wooden crates. They are placed in the middle of the backyard and do well. But I needed more space. So I asked hubby could we try and get a garden bed for around the side. We found one at Bunnings that was a good shape and was tall enough for the sun to shine those important rays for the veggies to grow.

I bought the net covering separately. It keeps out nasty bugs and also provides protection from the heat of the sun. It still allows the plants to get sunshine but lessens the harshness.

This good little bug was hanging around the outside of the net.

The fruit trees are covered in blossoms.

The wild strawberries have started flowering.

I also added a nice three-piece outdoor setting around the side so I can hide from the kids. No, only joking! I wanted to pretty up the area and make it more usable. It is a lovely shaded spot in the afternoon, and it would be a perfect place to sit in the summer.

In The Garden… Enjoying the Sun

The past few days we have been lucky to have enjoyed some wonderful sunshine in Melbourne. All the plants and veggie seedlings have been absorbing the warmth. When the sun comes out, I always feel the need to venture outside. It is very enticing for me.inthegardenThe veggie seedlings have grown a little bit. I need to give the snow pea and pea seedlings some wire to climb on. They are trying to reach for something to grab. The green stake I am using is too big for them to cling on to. Poor things.inthegarden1inthegarden2The parsley just keeps on growing. I need to cut some back and start drying it.inthegarden3What is growing in your garden? Have you planted any new plants?

In The Garden… Happy Little Seedlings

All my new seedlings are tucked cosily into the veggie boxes. They have new soil which has been turned over. The veggie boxes are weed free and enjoying the new residents.inthegarden1inthegarden2inthegarden3inthegarden4inthegarden5inthegarden

  • A cute little bush of Lemon Thyme
  • Trying out a Perennial Basil-Mint plant
  • The Beetroot seedlings are so tiny compared to the large veggie box
  • Snow Pea seedlings in a row
  • Also, a row of some Garden Pea seedlings
  • The sun was shining onto my loganberry bush. Absorb the rays guys!

That is what has been happening in my garden this week.

In The Garden… New Seedlings

Our trip to Bunnings last weekend, saw me bring home some seedlings for my veggie garden. I couldn’t resist heading out into the garden section and have a little look at what was in season. I know I said I was going to wait until spring/summer but I can’t!! Who can resist the urge to get out into the garden, not me! newsoilOn Monday I had some new soil delivered so I could top up my veggie boxes. The new seedlings are going to love their fresh soil.newsoil2Some of my new seedlings, Beetroot and Peas.newsoil3I also got some Snow Peas and Lemon Thyme.newsoil1The new seedlings are awaiting their new home so I hope to get out there today and settle them in.
