In The Garden….. New Growth

  • The cucumber plant has flowers starting to bloom
  • The strawberry plant is starting to have runners growing over the wine barrels
  • New flowers for the strawberries
  • While I was taking photos of the flowers a hoverfly came in and had some nectar. I hope he/she enjoyed it.

Gummy Bear Thumbprint Cookies

I have really wanted to get back into baking goodies for the kids lunch boxes. Over the christmas school holidays I stopped baking cakes, slices etc. The kids didn’t eat as much and I found it was a waste if I baked something every second day like I do for when they are at school. I did bake a cake here and there but not as often.

To ease myself back into baking, I wanted to make something that was quick and easy. I found this recipe on pinterest and decided to give it a go.

Gummy Bear Thumbprint Cookies

This recipe makes 15 cookies
Recipe type: Cookies
Serves: 8
  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • ¼ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence/extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • a pinch of salt
  • gummy bears, I used 2 per cookie
  1. In a bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar. Add egg yolk and stir in vanilla. Mix in flour and salt until combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in the freezer for 10 minutes. This will help by preventing the centre of the cookies from cracking.
  2. Preheat the oven to 150°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  3. Roll cookies into a tablespoon sized ball. Arrange on tray making sure you leave some space between each cookie. Using your thumb, press a deep hole in the centre of the cookie. Make it big enough so the gummy bears won't spill out once melted.
  4. Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until they are almost done. Take them out of the oven and them place 2 gummy bears in each cookie. Then put the tray back in the oven and cook for a further 2 minutes until the gummy bears have melted.
  5. Let the cookies cool on tray for a few minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

This is what has been happening in our garden this week.

  • Basil
  • Rainbow chard
  • Bush cucumber
  • Some of our plants are burnt on their tips from the hot weather
  • A plant has come up in our dirt area where we are landscaping the backyard. I am not sure what it is but I think it looks like a pumpkin. What do you think?
  • One of our trees in the backyard has little acorns growing. They look very cute.

Ripe red tomatoes

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. The weather here was lovely, not too cold and not too hot. I headed out into the garden and turned over the soil in the veggie boxes and planted the new seedlings. Grow little guys, grow!

Our tomato plants have given us a heap of little tomatoes. All of sudden they are ripening and you see little round red surprises amongst the leaves. Within the last two weeks though I have had to keep an eye on the tomatoes, as we seem to have some little guests having a feast on them. I had to let the dogs out early one morning ( it was still dark) and they started to go nuts running around the veggie box where the tomatoes are planted and trying to jump up on the sides. I grabbed a torch and went to have a look. I shined the light to the top of the tomato plants and there they were, two little mice! They were having a lovely chew on my ripe red tomatoes. I couldn’t do much at 3.00 am so I went back inside and hopped back into bed. When I got up in the morning (a better time of 6.30 am) I headed out to try and deter those guests from coming back. I covered the tomatoes that still needed to ripen with paper bags and tied them up at the top. I had to do a similar thing like this last year and it did work but if the paper bags get soggy from watering and rain you just need to change them. So far its working and I hope they stay away until my harvesting of the tomatoes has finished. Little buggers!

With the tomatoes that we did save, we used some of them last night in our dinner. My hubby cooked chicken parma and made a lovely tomato sauce to spread over the crumbed chicken. It feels good knowing that you have grown them yourself and of course they taste so much better than the store bought ones. I just hope I will have some tomatoes left to pick and get my hubby to make some more of his nice homemade sauce.

In the garden….. weeding and turning over soil



  • Corn needs to come out and do some weeding
  • Clear up the weeds and turn over the soil
  • I still haven’t planted the seedlings that I bought last week.

With the weather being cooler this weekend I am going to head out into the garden and prepare the veggie boxes for the new seedlings. I was supposed to plant the seedlings last weekend but the days went by so fast. They definitely need planting so I am making sure I get out in the garden tomorrow.

A couple of years ago I decided that I wanted to grow some vegetables and fruit trees in our backyard. We started off with some wine barrels placed around our pergola area but it just wasn’t enough room. We ended up buying some large wooden crates that you see full of fruit and vegetables at the markets. We have 3 placed in the middle of the backyard where it gets the sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. I found the wine barrels were not deep enough for growing vegetables, they needed more growing room.

After the crates were set up, the wine barrels were just sitting there empty. What could I put in them? My Diggers Club catalogue arrived and while I was reading it I found the answer. Berries! I have always wanted to grow some berries in our backyard. First wine barrel candidate a thornless blackberry bush. The start of my berry bush collection. What followed next was a Loganberry  and a blueberry bush. Then a few weeks later while shopping at Bunnings I purchased a Red currant bush and a Cranberry bush. The Blackberry bush gave us a handful of blackberries at the start of summer. Quite good for its first harvest. Now the Blueberry bush has started to give us some little baubles of colour. Not bad for its first year. I look forward to seeing next summers harvest. I might have enough to make some jam!
